Middle school changes the pace: one teacher per subject, more homework, more frequent tests and topics that build on each other from year to year. A student who was comfortable in primary school can fall behind within a few months, especially in maths and languages.
The three years lead to the 3rd-year regional exam, then to a choice of common-core stream in high school. Middle-school marks therefore weigh directly on what comes next.
A private tutor fills the gaps, helps the student get organised and trains them on exercises at the level expected in class, in the language used at school (Arabic, or French in international streams and private schools).
Middle school, year by year
1st year of middle school
The transition year. The student meets several teachers and a busier timetable; tutoring helps build good study habits from the start.
2nd year of middle school
Topics get harder, especially in maths (algebra, geometry) and physics and chemistry. This is often when gaps settle in if they are not addressed.
3rd year of middle school
The year of the regional exam and of orientation. Work focuses on reviewing the syllabus, past papers and time management during the exam.
The 3rd-year regional exam
At the end of the 3rd year of middle school, students sit a unified regional exam set by their Regional Academy of Education and Training (AREF). Its mark is combined with continuous assessment to decide the move to high school.
Regular support during the year works better than last-minute catching up: one or two lessons a week in weaker subjects, then sessions on past papers as the exam approaches.
